Content Incoming

Posted in General with tags on March 25, 2010 by thistlefizz

I’ve been on somewhat of a blogging hiatus lately.  As many of my regular readers know, back in January I had a bad skiing accident, and have spent the last few months recovering.  I decided to make that my primary focus and some of the things in my life that were ‘extraneous’ (like blogging, late night parties, and putting on pants) I decided to put on hold for a little while.  But now that I am pretty much fully recovered and am even working again, I have decided that I can expand my energies into other aspects.  So I apologize to my readers for disappearing for such a long time, and recognize that I may have to win you over again to get some semblance of regular readership, but rest assured I have not forgotten you.  I’ve even tried to get back into regular posts a couple of times, but ended up with the same writers block that I had when I first started blogging.  I finally realized that unless I just started posting again, and stopped obsessing about the quality of the posts, that I would never actually start up again.

Content is coming.  For reals.

New Page Added

Posted in General with tags on January 20, 2010 by thistlefizz

You will notice that I have added a new page to my website; a glossary of terms related to theater and entertainment lighting. I have added this page because I am going to start talking about what I do for a living a lot more and I don’t want to have to stop and explain every other word.  It disrupts the flow of the piece as well as my train of thought.  So I put up a fairly comprehensive list of terms that may come up.  I don’t expect anyone to become a professional just by reading it, but I’m hoping that everyone will have a much better understanding of what I do and what it is I’m talking about.

I’m currently working on a few posts related to lighting and what it’s like to work on a job site, so I encourage everyone to take some time and paruse through the new page.  It’s super long though, so don’t feel like you have to read it all.  Just get the basic gist of the page, and where things are and then you can use it as a reference later.

As a side note, while I was making this glossary, I thought about how nice it would be to have a page like that for World of Warcraft related terms.  So I’ll probably work on another glossary page related to that topic.  Feel free to post any WoW terms you think I should define, or any that you currently don’t understand yourself and I’ll see what I can do.

Enjoy.

Three months! Hooray!

Posted in General with tags , , on December 2, 2009 by thistlefizz

My blog is three months old today.  Yes, that’s right, today we’re getting all meta.  I can’t help it.  But since it seems like plenty of other bloggers self analyze their blogs, I feel justified in doing it myself.  Ok fine, the truth is I couldn’t think of anything else to write about today.  But I promise the post will be funny as well as informative.  After all, learning is fun!

I haven’t been around long enough to go into some long treatise on the intentions of the blog juxtaposed against the actual posts and the degree to which they have succeeded in implementing those intentions.  Besides, that’s totally boring.  So instead, I’m going to list a few stats and talk about the interesting things people are searching that lead them to my blog.

Stats, and figures, and data oh my!

Introducing: Wizzbang

Posted in Story time with Uncle Wizzbang with tags , , on October 27, 2009 by thistlefizz

Well I have mentioned my old roommate, Wizzbang, in a number of posts already.  He’s the one who got me into WoW and he’s like an encyclopedia when it comes to Lore.  He knows everything there is to know about Lore in this game.  If you need to know something lore related, especially if you are having trouble with a quest because you can’t find something, you just ask him and he knows it.  He also spends a lot of time pondering the implications and interactions of the developments in the story, like the upcoming Icecrown patch and of course Cataclysm.  Because he always seems to have interesting things to say, I have asked him to become a contributor to the Cranky Old Gnome.  So without further adieu, I will turn over this post to Wizzbang.

_____

My name is Wizzbang.
I’m a Gnome Mage whose preferred spec is Frost.
I like Engineering, Mining, sunsets, killing loving bunnies, and long walks on the beach.
I have a summer home in Grizzly Peaks and a winter home on a tiny floating island in Nagrand.
I spend weekends polishing my roflcopter and chopper, feeding my extensive menagerie of pets, and aggroing mobs off even the mightiest tank.
I’ve been playing the WarCraft series since the early 90s, and WoW since November 23rd, 2004. Fizz has asked me to be a writer here because I have a terrifyingly extensive knowledge of WoW lore, tied (I’m sure) to the fact that I’m actually an academic, and to the fact that I would read/contribute to WoW Wiki articles in between assignments at work. As such I will generally be contributing posts about lore, quest-lines, common sense approaches to game-play, the history of WoW as a game, and the broader scope of things (insofar as it relates to WoW anyway).
I adore playing a DPS class, and a caster in particular, so I will also be contributing posts dealing with the squishy DPS perspective on things. Like how frustrating it is when the tank and healer won’t get out of the way while I’m AoE-ing the Black Knight’s second-stage EXPLODING ghouls which I’ve risked life and limb to Frost Nova in place in a small cluster so the tank can kite the boss away…AND WHAT IS THE HEALER DOING STANDING NEXT TO THE TANK ANYWAY?!? STUPID NIGHT ELF DRUIDS — BURN THEM ALL, THAT’S WHAT I SAY!!!!

*ahem*

Yes, well…
My favorite races are: Tauren, Dwarves, Gnomes, Blood Elves, Forsaken.
And oh, yes — I truly HATE Night Elves.

Blog woes

So I’m still getting used to how to post things correctly.  Apparently if I write a post and then save it as a draft, when I then finally post it, the original date and time is the one used.  I don’t know why I didn’t realize that before–it makes perfect sense.  But that means a bunch of posts are out of order and may have been ignored if you have been coming here looking for new posts at the top of the page.  I’m working on re-ordering them.

I promise I’m not usually this stupid….I’ll get the hang of it yet!

Clearly I have no idea what I'm doing…

So I created the blog crankyoldgnome.wordpress.com and then decided I didn’t want to have .wordpress in the url.  So I registered www.thecrankyoldgnome.com so I could have my own little domain tucked away in cyberspace without the .wordpress part.  But now there seems to be linking/forwarding issues.  Although it doesn’t seem to be a problem for anyone else except my old roommate.  He can see the site just fine when I make  www.thecrankyoldgnome.com the slave and crankyoldgnome.wordpress.com the primary.  But when I reverse it and crankyoldgnome.wordpress.com directs to www.thecrankyoldgnome.com he is unable to see the sight. In the morning when I’ve had some sleep I’ll try and figure out what the problem is.  But if anyone happens upon this blog and knows what my problem is–I’m all ears.

[edit]

I’m temporarily changing it back to what it was so that he can at least read what I have now.  Hopefully I’ll remember to change it back in the morning.
